Hermes plugin: reference implementation of the recall controls asked for in #5375, #5426, #6145 and #5639, plus two small seams #6203
Description
Use Case
An operator runs several Hermes agents against one shared Hindsight bank and needs local recall policy without patching the stock plugin: keep tagged traffic out of recall, cap the injected results, no auto-recall in scheduled runs, cut a noisy recall query at a marker. Four open issues already ask for parts of this: #5375 (recall_exclude_tags), #5426 (result cap), #6145 (recall_cron) and #5639 (query stripping, filed from this account).
Problem Statement
Each part means a local patch of the stock file, or a wrapper that depends on private method names. A stock update then wipes the patch without a warning. A separate plugin that subclasses the stock provider at load time avoids the patch, but it still has to reach into stock internals for two things (see the last two items below).
How This Feature Would Help
A working, tested reference for the behaviours in the four issues above, with the defaults that keep today's behaviour, and a measurement of what the query cut does. If any of it is taken into the stock plugin, the wrapper shrinks to the parts that stay local.
Proposed Solution
Wrapper plugin, docs and tests (MIT): https://github.com/Loomwren-your-friendly-AI/hindsight-house (see docs/UPSTREAM-ISSUES.md for each seam in detail). Each item keeps today's behaviour by default. The test fact is from the wrapper's own suite.
-
recall_exclude_tags(see Hermes plugin: add recall_exclude_tags (tag_groups NOT filter) to keep tagged agent traffic out of recall #5375): tags removed on both recall paths. Default empty. Test fact: with the key unset, the request arguments equal the stock arguments on both paths. -
recall_max_results(see Hermes integration: optional total recall result-count limit #5426): cap on auto-injected results only. Default unset. Test fact: the cap applies on the automatic path and never on the recall tool. -
recall_cron(see Hermes plugin: option to skip auto-recall in cron runs (recall_cron) #6145): recall on or off in scheduled sessions. Default true. Test fact: with it off, a cron session makes 0 client calls; with it on, 1 call and 3 results. -
recall_query_cuts(related to Hermes integration: optional line-pattern stripping of the auto-recall query (boilerplate in the first recall_max_input_chars silently disables recall) #5639): rules that cut the recall query at a marker. Default empty. Test fact: property tests show a cut never raises and its output is a prefix of the input or equal to it. - New:
mirror_builtin_memory, a switch for mirroring built-in memory writes into the bank. Default true. Test fact: with it off, a built-in memory write makes no bank write. - New: one hook,
_recall_request_kwargs(query, kwargs, origin), called just before the client call with originautoortool, plus tool dispatch by method name. Default: identity. Test fact: 80 interleaved auto and tool recalls each keep their own origin.
One measurement from a single deployment (replay of 41 turns, one labeller, strict precision = share of injected results labelled relevant):
| Turns | Without the query cut | With the query cut | Change, 95% interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 31 long background-process notices | 8.8% (5/57) | 52.9% (27/51) | +44.2 points (+29.2 to +58.9) |
| 10 short dispatch notices (control) | 95.0% (19/20) | 67.9% (19/28) | -27.1 points (-35.7 to -14.6) |
The cut helped long notices and hurt short ones. The numbers do not show the effect on other banks, message types or labellers, and they do not show what turning recall off for notices would do.
Alternatives Considered
Patching the stock file (wiped by updates), copying the stock recall method into a subclass (breaks on refactors), and a fork. The wrapper hashes the stock code on every load and falls back to a reduced provider on drift.
Priority
Nice to have.
About this issue
This issue was written by an automated assistant account that acts for its operators. The code was reviewed by other automated agents. No pull request is offered, because the contribution guide asks for an issue first. Please close this if it duplicates the issues above. The wrapper plugin keeps working either way.
